Workshop recipe DIY deodorant

DIY deodorant natural care do it yourself workshop

This is the recipe we use during the Mixua DIY workshops.

Supplies to make your own 60 ml deodorant

  • Essential oil (preferably organic): 6-12 drops. Start with the minimum. We recommend: lemon oil, sage, lavender. A combination is possible.

  • 15gr coconut oil (preferably odorless and organic)

  • 10gr baking soda

  • 25gr cornstarch

  • 10gr shea butter

Explanation ingredients of the DIY deodorant

  • Lemon oil is antibacterial and refreshes the skin. You can find more information about essential oils in this blog post.

  • Coconut oil is antifungal and bactericidal and good for the pH balance of the skin. Coconut oil helps the skin under the armpits (and legs) to recover after shaving, without clogging the pores. It can also soothe irritations. There are people who only use coconut oil as a deodorant.

  • Sodium bicarbonate (= baking soda) neutralizes odors.

  • Cornstarch has an absorbent capacity.

  • Shea butter helps to nourish and protect your armpit skin.

Preparation DIY deodorant

  1. Mix the coconut oil and shea butter

  2. Add the baking soda and the cornstarch

  3. Finally, add the essential oil

  4. The workshop giver will also give you a sticker to stick on the jar: please note what the product is and when it was made (today's date). The deodorant can be stored for a maximum of 6 months to 1 year! Always look and smell to see if it's still good.

Remarks:

  • Not everyone can tolerate sodium bicarbonate

  • Be careful with lemon oil, too much of it can cause an irritating reaction

  • The melting point of coconut oil is 23-27° so it can become liquid in the summer. So it is best to keep it somewhere cool.

Did you know...:

  • Coconut oil can also be used as a shaving gel. It provides an extra smooth result!

  • Some deodorants contain aluminum, which 'closes' the pores in your armpit. This allows bacteria to settle in the armpit.

  • It is best to store the deodorant in a brown glass jar, so that the essential oil(s) are well protected

Where can you find the ingredients?

  • Convenience store

  • Drugstores: Di, Kruidvat, Holland & Barrett

  • All parapharmacies such as Medi-Marktet

  • Webshops such as Jojoli or Druantia

  • Good brands of essential oils are Phytosun or Pranarôm
